Bulawayo is set for revival as the country’s industrial hub with new industrial projects such as the construction of a new cement manufacturing plant valued at over US$50 million by a Chinese company, Labenmon Investments.
The Permanent Secretary in Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Paul Nyoni said the plant which will have an annual output of 900 000 tonnes signifies a major leap forward in the city’s re-industrialization drive.
“This is a significant development for the city, not only in terms of job creation but also as a major stride towards our re-industrialisation goals. The plant is being constructed by a Chinese company currently based in Botswana. It approached the Bulawayo City Council and came to our office to speed up the process and we are at finalising stages for the deal with the necessary environmental regulations to be followed. The plant is set to employ 200 local people,” he said.
Mr Nyoni also elaborated on the expected economic benefits.
He added, “Reduced reliance on imports will translate into significant foreign currency savings. Additionally, the plant will stimulate ancillary industries that supply raw materials and transportation services. A stable supply of locally produced cement will lead to more competitive pricing and ultimately make construction projects more affordable. The plant will be put in an area near the rail so that we can boost our railway network in the city.”
