THE iconic Victoria Falls echoed with the sounds of punches and cheers this weekend as the Zimbabwe Boxing Federation (ZBF) hosted a national open tournament to select the team that will represent the nation at the prestigious Mandela African Boxing Cup in Durban, South Africa, this April.
Over 70 boxers, from aspiring juniors to seasoned veterans, descended on the Victoria Falls Boxing Academy in Matabeleland North Province showcasing their talent.
The electrifying atmosphere crackled with anticipation as each bout unfolded, filled with displays of athleticism, grit, and determination.
ZBF technical director, Steven Masiyambumbi said, “All provinces are represented here, we want to come up with a strong team that will represent Zimbabwe at Mandela Cup in Durban from 15 to 21 April 2024. Everyone is being given a chance here. This tournament is also a fantastic opportunity to witness the depth of boxing talent we have in Zimbabwe.”
Victoria Falls Boxing Academy says it is honoured to host the tournament.
“This is encouraging when tournaments of this magnitude continue to be held here. This will inspire us to recruit more young stars into the sport,” said Victoria Falls Boxing Academy director, Tobias Mupfuti.
The fans equally had a good time.
“This tournament is also a fantastic opportunity to witness the depth of boxing talent we have in Zimbabwe,” said a boxing fan.
Another said, “This is exciting and beneficial to the community as it brings the Victoria Falls community together.”
“As young people we are getting the opportunity to choose another career path, we are excited to be here,’ added a young fan.
This exhilarating tournament not only served as a springboard for Zimbabwe’s boxing future but also reaffirmed Victoria Fall’s quest to become a sport tourism destination of choice.
