TEAM Zimbabwe have started preparations for the Special Olympics World Games set for Berlin, Germany from 17th to the 25th of June this year.
The Special Olympics World Games are the world’s largest inclusive sports event with over 7 000 athletes with intellectual disabilities expected to compete in 22 sporting codes.
The aim of the global games is to unleash the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports and to empower people with intellectual disabilities to become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all.
Former Germany national football team’s captain, Phillip Lahm is one of the honoured guests who will be taking an active role during the games as well as presiding over the official opening and closing ceremonies.
Zimbabwe is expected to be part of the cast in Berlin and have already started their preparations with their first periodic camp being held at different sports centres in Harare.
Track and field athletes as well as those participating in bocce are training at the National Sports Stadium, while golfers are based at Royal Harare Golf Club.
Zimbabwe has previously done well in golf and track events and this time, they are hoping to continue with their good work.
Zimbabwe’s team management is already putting all the pieces in place to ensure successful participation.
