Story by Mthokozisi Dube

BULAWAYO province is hoping to improve on their athletics performance in the National Athletics Championships set for Lomagundi College in Chinhoyi from the 22nd to the 23rd of March.

A fully-packed White City was the venue for the first National Primary Heads Inter Districts Athletics meet post the Covid-19 era as they prepare for the national championships.

In the last edition of the national competitions, Bulawayo province came sixth, a position they hope to improve on in this year’s Lomagundi meet which will see ten provinces challenging for honours.

Bulawayo province chairman Bongani Sibanda said, ‘‘We are happy to have hosted the first athletics competition. You will remember that our last participation was in 2019 before the aborted 2020 competitions were disrupted by the pandemic. So, we remain hopeful as we seek to improve our performance.’’

The athletes hope to make it into the final squad of sixty.

Bulawayo province head in charge athletics Sarafina noted, ‘‘We are happy all the districts are giving their best which will give us a wider pool to select podium winning athletes.’’

Working with the Bulawayo Athletics Board, National Association of Primary School (NAPH) officials attended refresher courses as they aim to improve their skills.
