Zimbabwe kick off COSAFA Cup campaign with win

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Reporter

ZIMBABWE kicked off their 2024 COSAFA Cup with a one-nil victory over Comoros at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa this Thursday.

The Warriors signalled their return to the regional tournament donning a substandard kit that did not even have a national flag on it.

In fact, the kit looked more like the one used to be worn by Northern Region Division One side Golden Eagles two seasons ago.

The Warriors kit also disappointed the fans who took to social media to vent their frustrations.

On the field of play, Zimbabwe did not really shine but were never troubled by minnows, Comoros who are yet to stamp their authority in the region.

Manica Diamonds forward Micheal Tapera secured victory for Zimbabwe after poking home a good cross from Farai Banda in the 53rd minute.

Zimbabwe created more chances but were not able to convert.

Winger, Tinotenda Meke was one of the bright sparks in the game, while the combination of Juan Mutudza and Donald Mudadi in central midfield showed signs of life.

The defence marshalled by captain Godknows Murwira was solid to give Zimbabwe three points in the first group B match.

The Warriors play their second match on Sunday when they date defending record champions Zambia in a battle of the Zambezi.
