Pious Nleya elected Child President

Story by Peter Chivhima

In a landmark election held in Harare this Saturday, Pious Nleya of Mzilikazi High School in Bulawayo was unanimously elected as the President of the Junior Parliament for 2024, succeeding Neville Mavhu of Goromonzi High School.

The election, which saw a total of 260 voters exercise their rights, was hailed as a resounding success, with officials declaring the process free and fair, without any irregularities or biases.

Stabile Mtigo from Midlands Province was elected as the Speaker of Parliament, while Bright Zendera from Masvingo Province took the reins as Senate President.

This new leadership marks a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s Junior Parliament, as the young legislators prepare to tackle pressing issues and shape the future of the nation.

The Junior Parliament was established in 1991 as a move by the Government to effectively engage children in policy processes.
