VICE President Kembo Mohadi is in Congo, Brazzaville for the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation where issues of reducing carbon emissions to mitigate climate change are taking centre stage.
The International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation, which is taking place under the auspices of the African Union Commission and the United Nations Forum on Forests, comes at a time when Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing atmospheric carbon as a strategy to fight climate change.
Vice President Mohadi noted that conserving biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem integrity remains key for the country and the continent.
“As we come into this international forum, we are doing all we can to ensure that we mitigate climate change by mobilising financial resources as well as access to the use of science, technology and innovation to support the growing of trees as part of our responsibility as a nation to upscale biodiversity.”
He also noted the need to adopt a sustainable global afforestation and reforestation strategy.
Zimbabwe is in the process of implementing the Tobacco Wood Energy Programme, where tobacco farmers are required to establish noodles to enhance the production of the golden leaf in an environmentally friendly manner.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has taken the lead in the planting of trees in the country, a key strategy in addressing the effects of climate change.
