THE two-day special voting is underway in South Africa ahead of the May 29 general election.
In a media briefing this Sunday, South Africa Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Masego Sheburi, said more than 1.6 million South Africans have been given the green light to cast their ballots during the special vote.
According to South Africa’s Electoral Act, domestic special votes are reserved for those who are either unwell or have impaired mobility.
The IEC will visit the special group at their homes or places of confinement.
The vote also includes those who wish to cast their vote early as they may not be able to access voting stations on General Election Day.
South Africans in the diaspora have already cast their votes.
In his national address Sunday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa commended the IEC for its impressive work in preparation for the elections.
South Africa goes to the polls on Wednesday, with over 50 parties vying for seats in the National Assembly and 11 independents contesting seats in different legislatures.
