Three million people attain documents in 2022

Story by John Nhandara

Government is set to embark on a mop up mobile registration exercise to issue national identity cards and birth certificates as the country gears up for elections.

This follows a successful exercise undertaken last year where three million documents were issued.

The six-month mobile registration exercise which commenced in April and ended in September last year had an initial plan to issue two million national documents across the country.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Honourable Kazembe Kazembe told the ZBC News crew that more than three million people accessed documents surpassing the initial target of two million.

He added that they will soon also embark on a mop up registration exercise before the elections to ensure everyone is eligible for voter registration.

“It was a successful exercise because we managed to issue 3 203 000 documents. The main purpose of the exercise was to reach out to all eligible Zimbabweans to obtain birth certificates, national IDs and as well as death certificates,” he said.

The exercise was carried out with a budget of ZW$12.1 billion with citizens having access to the documents at no cost.
