The church reflects on its massive responsibilities

Story Mercy Bofu

THE church says its responsibility goes beyond serving the spiritual needs of the people and the country, but to also include partaking in national economic development initiatives.

The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) in Masvingo this Sunday held an Easter church service with a difference; apart from the event being graced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Head of State also toured and commissioned various economic projects being carried out by the church.

This comes as the church has embraced the challenge of contributing to national development over and above serving spiritual needs.

A dam commissioned at the estate will be a key source of livelihood for congregants and the surrounding communities after a fisheries project was also launched this Sunday.

Also commissioned was a healthcare facility constructed by the church with support from the government to cut the distance travelled by community members to access health services.

The projects have been welcomed by congregants, who expect a massive transformation in their lives.

Leading the Easter Conference, Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi noted the importance of safeguarding the gains of the country’s revolution and maintaining peace in the country.

“Today as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we also celebrate the gains of the revolution. It is important to safeguard the gains of that revolution and as Christians, we must pray for peace, peace and peace,” he said.

The government recognises the importance of the church in peace building and the country’s development matrix, hence the continued support, noted Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga.

“As we go towards the general elections, the church has a role to play, which is to pray for peace and unity. We will continue working with the church as we preach peace, love and development,” he said.

Apart from the projects launched this Sunday, Mbungo is among the most productive estates in the province, producing maize and wheat.

All the developmental projects by the church are indeed something to celebrate, especially during the Easter celebrations when Christians celebrate renewal through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
