MORE than 5 000 teachers under the banner, ‘Teachers for Economic Development’ converged in Harare this Wednesday to declare their support for the Second Republic as they seek to become active participants in economic development.
With 32 companies having been established under the Teachers for Economic Development, the group is determined to embark on more income-generating projects, as explained by Teachers for Economic Development National Coordinator, Dr Amos Chiwocha.
“We have 6 240 members who have received ideological drilling at the Chitepo School of Ideology. We were inspired by your Vision 2030 to make sure that everyone makes a contribution to national development. It is a home grown initiative meant to impart knowledge and skills to make money and contribute positively to national programmes,” he said.
Vice President General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga applauded the initiative, saying the decision to take the front seat in economic development is a bold statement.
“Teachers decided to take a front seat in national development. This gesture cements the commitment by the teaching community. It is an endorsement by teachers that the President should continue with the work. When you go back, tell those that have remained behind that we have one candidate for the 2023 elections,” said Dr Chiwenga.
The Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, Honourable Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri applauded the move, saying it marks the beginning of a new era.
“This movement has embraced education with production. This blends well with your aspiration of Vision 2030,” she said.
The Teachers for Economic Development initiative seeks to ensure that no one is left behind in contributing to national development.
The Minister of Primary and Second Education, Dr Evelyn Ndlovu said, “This initiative has resulted in economic development which led to the birth of Teachers 4 ED. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has taken heed that all schools must embark on commercial ventures.”
The launch of Teachers for Economic Development was held under the theme, “Integrating Zimbabwean Teachers into the Mainstream Economy Through Ideological Orientation.”
