Over 50 political parties vie for national assembly seats in SA elections

Story by Oleen Ndori, Foreign Editor

SOUTH Africans went to the polls this Wednesday in a general election that has seen over 50 parties vying for seats in the National Assembly.

Polls opened this Wednesday morning across South Africa where at least 11 other independent candidates are contesting for seats in different legislatures.

More than 27 million people are registered to vote in the elections that highlight growing political fragmentation after 30 years of democracy.

After casting his vote, incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa said he is confident that the ANC will win the race.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has warned against disruptive protests, saying they have more than 17 000 officers on the ground, including around 2 800 soldiers who have been deployed in hotspots around the country to assist in maintaining law and order.

Meanwhile, the South Africa Independent Electoral Commission says they were well prepared for the election, with polling stations expected to close at 9 pm.

Results are expected on Sunday.
