Chipinge accident leaves woman crippled

Story by Tamuka Charakupa

A Chipinge woman lost her legs, while four other people escaped with minor injuries after a road traffic accident involving a light vehicle and a construction truck in the district this morning.

Survivors and eyewitnesses say the truck hit the light vehicle at a traffic light after brake failure.

The injured were rushed to the Chipinge District Hospital where they received medical attention, while one of the victims had her legs amputated.

“The truck was coming along the Mutare-Chipinge highway heading into the CBD then lost its brakes at the traffic lights. It managed to avoid hitting a Honda Fit before crashing into this Toyota Wish vehicle,” said an eyewitness.

“We were in this vehicle and what we just saw was a truck coming towards us and the next thing we were on the ground,” noted one of the victims.

“I was not in the vehicle but on the pavement when I just realised that something hit my leg,” added another victim.

Another said, “I was in the vehicle, I don’t know what happened but I am grateful that I was not injured.”

Meanwhile, police have urged drivers to inspect their vehicles before travelling to avoid loss of lives.
