CCC future hangs in balance

Story by Wellington Makonese

The future of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) hangs in the balance, amid confusion over the next move after the resignation of party leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

Days after the CCC leader stepped down, party members, particularly legislators are in a dilemma over the next course of action.

It is a catch-22 situation with confusion on whether to remain in Parliament or to resign.

The social media space, particularly X, has become a battle ground for the legislators and followers with regards to a common position after only one legislator, Honourable Fadzai Mahere, tendered her resignation to Parliament in solidarity with Advocate Chamisa.

Another clique of legislators, including Caston Matewu and Richard Tsvangirai, however, appears to be defiant claiming that they stand guided by the electorate.

Political analyst Mr Sympathy Pasipanodya contends what is at play in the opposition ranks is politics of supremacy and self-gain.

“In my opinion the CCC continues to be a charade where Chamisa and his people take people for granted. The people who voted for his MPs remain in the dark. One member says he sticks to the mandate by the people, Mahere says another. We may even see many more resignations.”

Another political commentator, Mr Takudzwa Gambiza believes the chaos in the opposition outfit is a manifestation of Chamisa’s divisive leadership strategy which seeks to keep the nation in election mode.

“It is like a design of such chaos, resignation without consultation shows that it was a move of his selfish needs. It’s the confusion that he is sharing to the different individuals. In his circles they claim no consultations, politics of strongman politics and weak institutions and the electorate is being sacrificed. An individual threatens the whole system of democracy.”

Amid the chaos, some are putting on a brave face with CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi using the party’s official X handle to call for calm among the party office bearers.
