Aspiring Gweru legislators promise servant leadership

Story by Tafara Chikumira

ASPIRING legislators for the Mkoba South Constituency in Gweru have promised to transform the constituency through infrastructure development and better social services.

The race to 23 August General Elections has reached the final lap with aspiring legislators for Mkoba South Constituency making strides in efforts to win the hearts of the electorate.

Ms Shelter Zimano a vendor by profession is representing the United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) with her focus on improving social amenities.

“As a mother, my major worry is the welfare of children. If I get into parliament, I will push for the remuneration of teachers since our children are suffering at school. The teachers are demanding money for extra lessons so children with parents who can’t afford them do not get attention,” she said.

Seasoned politician, Cde Wellington Magura who is representing ZANU PF in the constituency is promising servant leadership.

“The people who are going to choose me are masters. They are the ones who will tell me what to do in parliament and as a person who has chosen to represent them I will oblige without blinking an eye. In performing my oversight role, I will ensure that critical services have been taken care of. Issues of availability of clean water are being hampered by corruption in council and I will make sure I deal with such vice,” noted Magura.

Improving key infrastructure like roads and healthcare services is a priority for MDC-T representative, Mr Albert Chadoka,”The roads are in bad shape. As a parliamentarian, I will push for a policy that will empower local authorities to get funding from motor vehicle insurance which is currently being channelled to ZINARA. Such funds if collected by councils will be used to improve the state of our roads. We also have our clinics which need to be capacitated with drugs.”

The ZBC News crew had to travel twice to the Roman Catholic Church in Mkoba six after being promised an interview by CCC aspiring legislator for the area Mr John Kuka, but he was evasive.

“Guys, I have been given an instruction that we do a live debate on TV… Interjection reporter ….But, ours is for news and we have already given your other competitors space to lay out their manifesto….. I will get back to you ….. But tomorrow we will be out of town… I will come back to you in 30 minutes time and it’s me who will come back to you.”

With less than a week left before the 23rd of August General Elections, aspiring legislators are making their final appeal to the electorate in their dream to represent the people in parliament.
