AfDB President in Zimbabwe for arrears clearance talks

Story by Davison Vandira

THE African Development Bank ( AfDB) President , Dr Akinumwi Adesina has arrived in Zimbabwe ahead of the resumption of the high level meetings on modalities to clear the country’s external debt.

The AfD chief was in 2022 appointed by His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa as Zimbabwe’s champion on debt clearance plan.

He is in the country for the second time in two months after he facilitated the third structured dialogue in March where Zimbabwe engaged with its various creditors.

The Second Republic since inception through various policy instruments reaffirmed its commitment to the arrears clearance and debt resolution process with some having been extinguished.

Back in March, Dr Adesina emphasised that creditors and development partners should continue to support Zimbabwe in working through its debt issues.

The all-encompassing debt engagement will take place on Monday and another facilitator, former Mozambique President, His Excellency Joachim Chissano who is expected in the country this Sunday will also be in attendance.

Zimbabwe has also committed to clear the outstanding external debt with the debt resolution talks being considered an important element in restoring global financial confidence in the country.
