Mozambique marks 49 years of Uhuru

Story by Kenias Chivuzhe

Multitudes of Mozambican nationals thronged the Samora Machel Square in Chimoio for the country’s 49th independence celebrations this Tuesday.

The independence celebrations were held at provincial levels.

“We are happy to be attending this year’s independence celebrations as it has ushered in an era of development. Roads are being constructed as well as schools and hospitals among others,” said a Mozambican citizen.

Another said, “We have recorded significant progress in the mining of gold and extraction of gas. These positive developments have been achieved because we are an independent state.”

“We are looking forward to continue experiencing progress under the leadership of FRELIMO, independence has ensured we elect our leaders freely,” added a citizen.

Before the main event, the Mozambican officials led by the Governor of Manica Province, Honourable Franscisca Domingos Tomas and the Zimbabwean officials led by the Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza laid wreaths and paid homage to fallen heroes at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Honourable Domingos Tomas spoke on the developmental strides achieved by the country after attaining independence.

“As the government in Manica province, we will continue to promote infrastructural development. We must combat hunger and early child marriages, they are retarding development. In celebrating this day, we need to bear in mind the situation in Cabo Delgado. Terrorism is affecting children who are not going to school within the affected province. I would like to compliment the Mozambican defence forces for their work to fight terrorism and promote peace.”

Advocate Mugadza noted how the liberation of Mozambique gave birth to Zimbabwe’s independence.

“This is a great day for both Mozambique and Zimbabwe as the independence of Mozambique gave birth to the independence of Zimbabwe. We have been sent by President Mnangagwa to join you today on this important day. Our President celebrates with you and is happy with the cordial relations enjoyed by the two countries.”

Meanwhile, it was an entertainment galore with musical groups including the ZCC church band taking the limelight.

The event also saw war veterans being given medals for their contribution during the war of independence.
