Harare City Council abandons bus termini projects

Story by Cordelia Ngara

RESIDENTS have criticised the Harare City Council for failing to put to good use spaces structured as bus termini which have become white elephants, with destitutes invading the premises.

Decades have passed since the Harare City Council designed a premise behind the National Sports Stadium to be a bus terminus.

Years later, the abandoned facility is now a pale shadow of itself after been invaded by several of destitutes.

Failure by the local authority to utilise such facilities is despite the fact that the Harare Central Business District is heavily congested with a few designated pick and drop points.

“I think there was lack of proper planning, they did not exhaust their planning because this rank is far, did they even consider the convenience of people or they are just doing projects for the sake of doing? Wasting money, because the whole objective is to get into town quickly. Now if we drop people in town they clamp us when they are not finishing their projects kuno,” said a Harare resident.

Another bus termini in kopje area has been laying idle for years, with trees having grown big and people are using it for various reasons.

However, when ZBC News sought a comment, the city fathers were in never ending meetings.

The Harare City Council is often under fire from its constituency for poor planning, corruption and neglect of duty which has culminated in poor service delivery.
