CUBA has reiterated its continued support to the government of Zimbabwe in its efforts to improve the health delivery system.
This comes at a time when another group of Cuban medical doctors is expected in the country next week.
As Cuba and Zimbabwe continue to foster relations in various spheres of the economy, Cuba has reiterated its support to the local health delivery system.
This emerged during a farewell luncheon for a 13-member team of Cuban medical doctors that was in the country for the past five years.
The 13th Cuban Medical Brigade comprised gynaecologists, forensic pathologists, paediatricians, dermatologists, nutritionists, and neurologists who were deployed at various hospitals across the country.
“The next team of specialists is coming on the 15th of May with three forensic pathologists coming in to support the training of pathologists here in Zimbabwe. They will be deployed at the major referral hospitals in the country.
“Zimbabwe has made significant strides, especially in the paediatric department. You find there is quite a number of specialists in the area stationed at so many hospitals and the work they are doing is commendable in food and nutrition, research and treatment.
“The Forensic field is the one that needs reinforcement. As it stands not so many people are practising and we are gladly willing to train doctors in that area,” said doctors who spoke to ZBCNews.
The Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Dr John Mangwiro commended the work ethic and professionalism of the Cuban doctors which culminated in knowledge transfer.
“We continue to work together in improving the health delivery system of our people. We appreciate the cooperation that has spanned over three decades,” said Dr Mangwiro.
“Both countries have faced challenges due to interference from the West and sanctions have been imposed but that has not even deterred us from finding ways of cooperation and forging business synergies that have seen us signing MOUs in technology transfers for drugs and other medical research reports.”
Zimbabwe and Cuba share cordial relations in various fields including the health sector for the past 36 years.
