BINGA District is considered too dry to make crop farming viable. As a result, the Tonga people look to the Zambezi River for fishing, mostly bream and kapenta, mainly for household consumption and commercial purposes.
The men and women in Binga spend long nights on the Zambezi River fishing kapenta, which they have described as a lucrative and adventurous business.
The Second Republic is on a drive to uplift rural communities with particular attention being given to Binga which historically lagged behind in terms of development.
Last year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa visited Binga and handed over 17 fishing rigs to chiefs, women and youths as part of government’s empowerment initiatives.
Government is determined to help the people of Binga shift from subsistence farming to commercial fish farming.
