Zimbabwe will join other countries in participating on the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York this week.
The Zimbabwean delegation, led by the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Dr. Sithembiso Nyoni, will be travelling to New York to defend Zimbabwe’s priorities on the Commission on the Status of Women.
The session begins this Monday until the 17th of this month and is dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
For Minister Nyoni, the conference brings an opportunity for meaningful discussions on the empowerment of women and girls as the world goes digital.
“CSW is the commission on the status of women, it brings together women from all over the world to discuss the status of women. The theme this year is ‘Innovation and Technological Change and Education in Digital Age for Achieving Gender Equality for all Women and Girls’. This is a very topical theme as the world has gone digital and we are going to be looking this year as how it is affecting women and as Zimbabwe’s delegation, we will be inputting on our achievements as a country,” said the Minister.
Although digitalisation raises new challenges, Zimbabwe is convinced that new technologies can help propel development especially on the rural folk.
Minister Nyoni noted, “A lot has been done on the digital space to include women. A a ministry, we have a platform for all women to interact that we are doing with COMESA we have women who are subscribing to that and are communicating to find markets, financial opportunities on that space. We are also going to be showcasing what we have also done as a ministry in promoting the digital age.
“As a nation, we are going to be having three side events. One, as a ministry we are going to be showcasing what we have done on the digital space and the other is going to be on the Gender Commission that is going to be giving another side event. So these side events then go into detail of what Zimbabwe is doing on the theme that is given each year.so we really look forward to the event,” she added.
Since the beginning of his mandate, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has declared equality between women and men. He has since supported ambitious projects and programmes to achieve equal opportunities.
