Ambuya Stella Chiweshe buried

MBIRA music icon Ambuya Stella Chiweshe who died on Friday last week has been buried at Nekati Village in Masembura area of Bindura.

Hundreds of people thronged the village to bid farewell to the late Mbira Dzavadzimu musician and multiple award winner, Ambuya Chiweshe.

“Our musician, our advisor, our pillar of strength is gone today. We can’t talk of music without talking of Ambuya Stella Chiweshe ,“ said musician, Hope Masike.


Political leaders and government ministers paid tribute to Ambuya Chiweshe for her role in promoting the traditional sound of Mbira beyond the country’s borders.


“As we government we cherish the huge task she fulfilled as a musician and as a culture ambassador,” noted Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr. Monica Mavhunga.


“As a country, we have lost an icon and yet in more ways we have gained from her legacy that she is living with us today. I say go well mbira queen,” said the Minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, Dr. Kirsty Coventry.


Family members said the Mbira icon had a mission to empower the girl child which she managed to fulfill.


“Our mother was a woman with a quest to uplift the girl child, it wasn’t only to the outside world, but even to us her children, we grew up being told to know our place as women.”


After the official funeral proceedings, Ambuya Chiweshe was interred at a private ceremony attended by close family members in line with her request.
