Chiwandire prepares to fight world champion, Yamileth Mercado

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

WORLD Boxing Council (WBC) interim super bantamweight champion Kudakwashe Chiwandire has scaled up preparations for the world super bantamweight title bout against Mexican Yamileth Mercado in March.

This time, Chiwandire has shifted base to Invictus Fitness Centre as she hopes to match her tough opponent, Mercado, a world champion who has held the WBC World Super Bantamweight title for four years.

Affectionately known as ‘Take Money,’ Chiwandire understands the daunting task that lies ahead away from home.

“Playing away from home is challenging but I am ready for it. Remember when I went to Zambia there were no supporters, but I managed to win. Going to Mexico is going to be difficult with hometown decisions and all, but I am preparing myself for that and am going for a knockout.”

Chiwandire’s camp has also roped in a strength and conditioning coach as well as an endurance coach.

Delta Force Boxing Academy and Yamileth Mercado’s camp have already agreed on the price money as they await confirmation of the exact date of the fight from the World Boxing Council.
