Presidential Poultry programme launched in Mbire

By Tapiwa Machemedze

More than 3 000 families in Mbire District have benefitted from the Presidential Poultry Scheme meant to improve nutrition in rural communities while sustaining livelihoods.

More than 34 thousand chickens were handed over to the beneficiaries this Friday.

“This is a real empowerment initiative and we are going to rear these birds for home consumption and for sale,” a beneficiary told ZBC News.

Another said, “This is our day. We have received a gift that will change our lives forever. I am very pleased. From here I am going home to work on my project of keeping these chickens.”

For government, the initiative will only be complete when every Zimbabwean is on board.

“We are still saying no one, and no place should be left behind. This Presidential Poultry Scheme is testimony of that commitment as you see it here today in Mbire,” said Senator Monica Mavhunga, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.

440 000 chicks will be distributed in the entire province under the revolving scheme which is complementing the Presidential Goat Programme recently launched in Rushinga.
