Six people died in an accident along the Harare-Bindura Highway after a haulage truck ferrying fertilisers from Beira to Bindura veered off the road and overturned this Friday.
The accident occurred when a haulage truck failed to negotiate a curve and veered off the road.
A witness Brian Jonga said the haulage truck driver appeared to have been blinded by the bright lights of a stationary vehicle before veering off the road.
“When the truck driver was blinded, he ran over four members of the apostolic sect who were by the roadside. In the haulage truck, there were five people and two of them died. It’s very unfortunate because the truck was ferrying inputs,” Jonga said.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident saying the deceased include four pedestrians and two passengers, who all died on the spot.
“We can confirm that 6 people died yesterday at a 36 km peg along Bindura Road near Mazowe. Four of them who were by the roadside were hit by a haulage truck while five people were in the truck of which two died,” he said.
The names of the victims will be released once their next of kin have been informed.
