Beitbridge endures rising spate of armed robberies

By Innocent Nxumalo

Beitbridge is enduring a rising spate of armed robbery cases that have seen the Matabeleland South Regional Court issuing deterrent sentences to several outlaws.

However, the long arm of the law is catching up with notorious gun-trotting robbers who have been terrorising the border town.

Twenty-one-year-old Specious Sibanda who committed seven counts of armed robbery within two weeks was recently arraigned before the courts.

Beitbridge Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura sentenced Sibanda to 17 years in prison for four counts of armed robbery, while the other three counts are still pending.

The same court also sentenced two car hijackers Pardon Chamunorwa and Edson Takwanisa Hardson to a combined 20 years in jail.

The duo was nabbed for hijacking a Honda Fit and robbing the vehicle owner of personal valuables which include cell phones and cash.

The recent cases take place barely a month after the same court handed over a whopping combined sentence of 130 years imprisonment to three armed robbers who were convicted for 11 counts of violent crimes in the border town.
