Chevrons lose to Netherlands by 5 wickets

By Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

ZIMBABWE suffered a demoralising five-wicket defeat to minnows Netherlands at the ongoing International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

From the highs of beating fancied Pakistan, the Chevrons failed to keep up with the standards.

Even though the Chevrons declared that they were only targeting to reach the Super 12 stage, and were not targeting to reach the semi-finals, they could still have done much better.

Zimbabwe beat Pakistan in their first Super 12 matches before falling to Bangladesh in a match they should have won but lacked composure.

And this Tuesday against the Netherlands, the Chevrons sunk even further.

On a good batting wicket and against inferior opposition, the Chevrons put up a lowly 117 runs on the board.

The Dutch had no problem reaching that target as they romped home with two overs to spare and five wickets in hand.

Again the top order failed to set the platform, with captain Craig Ervine, Wessly Madhevere and Regis Chakabva scoring a paltry nine-run combined.

Only Rikander Raza, who scored 40 and Sean Williams who contributed 28 runs were able to get into double figures with all other batsmen struggling.

The Chevrons’ last game in Group 2 of the Super 12 is against India on Sunday.
